Chapter 18

As the others dispersed, Fi stepped forward. “Er, can I talk to you for a second?”

Gwen raised one eyebrow, folded her arms across her chest and nodded.

“I need some help. I’m on a case but I don’t know what to do next.”

The harpy frowned.

“I mean, I think magic’s involved but how do I find out more? I’m on my own and…”

“You’re not on your own. You’re part of the Magical Liaison Office; use them. Who’s your superior?”

“Agent Jones.”

“Jones?” the harpy laughed, her wings quivering. “Then you’re in good hands. If she recruited you, she must have seen something in you. Remember: trust yourself, learn to control your magic and don’t let it use you. Anything else?”

Fi shook her head. Gwen had confirmed her fears; Agent Jones expected her to do well and not bother her with stupid problems like not knowing what to do next.

“Alright, then get out of here.” The harpy turned and strode back to the house. Fi watched her go before running after the other students.

“Mosan! Can I grab a lift? I need to replace my hoover!”

Mosan was kind enough to drop Fi at an industrial estate on the outskirts of Oxford where there was a large appliance store. Fi perused the vacuum cleaners on display. Her hand hovered over a standard upright – it would do the job and be a decent replacement for her mum, but a gleam of purple plastic caught her eye. She turned, hand still outstretched, to look at the modern, compact vacuum. It was advertised not as a household appliance, but as an ‘experience’ with an omnidirectional cleaning head, no dust bag, low noise and suction to rival a tornado. Fi read the large, printed sign promising a ‘new era’.

An employee sidled up next to her, scenting a sale. His name badge read ‘Tom – ask me about our price match promise’.

“Interested in the Suxor Platinum X-5000 are we? I don’t blame you, it’s state of the art cleaning technology. The best we’ve got in store. Here why don’t you give her a whirl?” The salesman placed the cordless vacuum in Fi’s hand with reverence and stood back.

With a flourish, he produced a Ziplock bag filled with brown dirt from his shirt pocket. He emptied the contents onto the floor and gestured to Fi. She bit her lip then stepped up to the mess, depressed the plastic trigger and the vacuum sucked up the soil with ease.

“It’s got all the attachments for any of your cleaning needs; pet fur, long hair; deep pile carpets; hardwood floors; curtains. You name it, there’s an attachment for it. And it’s one hundred pounds off in our summer sale – personally I think someone in head office has messed up there – these things are flying off the shelves without any discount – but what do I know? I just sell the things – leave the details to corporate.”

Fi smiled wryly to herself at his use of the phrase ‘flying off the shelves’. Tom mistook her expression and smoothed his red tie down.
